For the Porsche
The following are some variations of what we refer to as "The System" for the Porsche. "The System" must be heard in person to be appreciated. Sound quality such as this is self evident. Every audiophile will be impressed.
Each generation (in terms of factory stereo layout) has different size speakers and locations, we have specific upgrades for your 911, Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne, please email us directly for your free copy.
SPEAKERS:
Focal and/or Hertz component separates
and speakers for door/dash locations (depending on year)
for door speakers, with high quality subwoofers
(options by reputable, solid brands like Arc Audio, Hertz, JL) installed in the Car Audio Innovations' enclosure panel(s)/enclosures on the rear floor
or shelf in 996/997. Rear speakers, just for some measure of "fill", a
pair of coaxials work fine, either Hertz, Kenwood Excelon or
Focal usually. With high quality speakers in a true 3 way
or 4 way system (4-way is possible in the 996/997, Cayman,
Cayenne) and the entire musical range
is well represented.
Some high quality (though not necessarily "extravagant") main speakers and rear speakers make excellent, clear and accurate sound, but without any type of subwoofers, there is a serious lacking of the lower frequencies. Even a modest subwoofer setup is better than none at all, and we're not talking about the boomy stuff that many younger folks seem to yearn for. We're talking about clean, crisp, clear quality lower midrange, midbass and bass from a balanced system that has an array of high quality speakers/drivers, each working in a specific range. Since the subs are playing lower frequenices, those frequencies can be filtered away from the door speakers-so they're working efficiently in their own musical range. Remember, most of these cars are not equipped for any speakers larger than about 5.25", so the woofers/subwoofers really make/break the system.
HEAD UNIT:
Kenwood Excelon, JVC Arsenal or Pioneer in-dash CD player or cassette player. These units are excellent products: Very clear, attractive, and the removable face plates provide for a compact and convenient theft deterrent. Some units have CD changer controls in case you wish to add a separate multi-disc changer. Even if you want to avoid the cost and additional work involved with adding amplifiers to your system, any of these head units will comfortably power one or two pairs of efficient 2-way speakers. Though many of these headunits no longer look like the Nakamichi pictured below, we have much better reliability with just about any other major brand. Nakamichi is no longer taking care of us on warranty on their units, so we will discontinue selling them. They sound great, but after about a year the cd mechanism can break down and it'll no longer play CD's. Nakamichi is no longer providing warranty coverage in the United States. We cannot get these repaired now unless we pay for repairs-even for units under warranty. So long, Nakamichi. Kenwood Excelon stuff has been rock solid and featuring 24 bit Burr Brown D/A converters for the past few years now, and they've proven more reliable than any other brand we've sold. We are authorized dealers so we back them up with a 2 year no hassle warranty. Our latest favorite heaudnit is the $299 KDCX792 by Kenwood, with great display features showing 3 lines of text-very handy with their Ipod cable/interface-which is only another $25. These units may not look like the Blaupunkt and Becker factory headunits, but they're by far more modern, better reliability, better tuners than anything available by any other brand-especially for the money. Go top of the line and get the KDCX991 with 1 24 bit D/A converter for each pair of RCA outputs (front/rear/sub), a super high resolution display which makes text look even better-512MB built into the deck, and rock solid like all Kenwood headunits. For 996, Boxster, 997, Cayman and Cayenne we have plenty of choices in headunits featuring 7" touchscreen with options for navigation, bluetooth handsfree, Ipod integration, etc.
AMPLIFIERS:
JL Audio, Audison, and ARC Audio amplifiers, in either 4 channel or 5 channel versions can be used to run your subwoofers, door speakers and rear deck speakers. The crossovers are built into each of these amps, and we adjust all settings before installing or shipping the amplifier to you. The recommended configuration for "the system" yields about 150-300+ continuous watts from such an amplifier, and it fits under the seat of any Porsche 911 from 1974-1998. We make a custom amplifier shelf for easy trunk mounting of an amplifier in the 996.
The end result of these components, installed, is a sound that we can only compare to very high-end home audio equipment, or a pair of high-quality headphones. The design of the interior of these cars seems to be the optimum environment for such a system. We are very impressed with the above system, and believe that any comparable setup will impress you.
